A tea bag that was claimed to have been used by the Queen has been removed from eBay.
Since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II - Britain’s longest-serving monarch - on September 8 at age 96, people have been paying their respects around the world by leaving tributes. Whilst other people have been cashing in on the tragedy by selling memorabilia supposedly connected to the Queen.
One seller located in Decatur, Georgia, US, listed a Lipton tea bag for more than £10,000 on the online auction site claiming it had been smuggled from Windsor castle back in 1998 and boasting “Own a piece of history! Priceless!.”
The auctioneer also claimed that the item had been verified by the Institute of Excellence in Certificates of Authenticity (IECA).
However netizens questioned the authenticity of the tea bag because of it being Lipton with the tagline “America’s favourite tea”.
A former palace aide said: “Her Majesty drank Earl Grey and sometimes Darjeeling. She didn’t dunk tea bags.”
The certificate by the IECA said: “It was featured in an online auction claiming to sell a teabag that was used by Queen Elizabeth and smuggled out of Windsor Castle by the special exterminator that was hired when the roaches got out of control.”
Twitter page ‘Say Cheese!’ uploaded the picture of the tea bag being sold on eBay.
Would-be buyers took to Twitter to voice their speculation.
One user said: “Ppl be buying anything,”
Another wrote: “Yeah sure, a monarch which owns a 400 Million $ diamond drinks ‘america‘s favorite lipton tea,’”
A third added: “I don’t believe she used that and if she did, I’m disappointed that the literal Queen of England is drinking something labelled ‘America’s favorite tea.’”
