A Greggs bakery got shut down for three days because of a protected red squirrel.

The Pitlochry branch had to close on Sunday (25.09.22), Monday and Tuesday after the animal made the store its new home, and evaded a safe capture for a few days.

Telling the tale on Twitter, the Greggs team said: "Some of you may have noticed we had a wee new starter in Pitlochry Greggs this week."

They joked that while "friendly locals offered their help" - such as a high school whose mascot in a squirrel - they didn't blame the furry friend for staying put.

They quipped: "Ultimately, if you were having a tasty sleepover in Greggs, would you leave? No, of course not."

They even made the squirrel its own name badge to be "part of the family".

On wednesday (28.09.22), Greggs revealed: "After giving us the run around, we managed to catch the Greggs Squirrel safe and sound. Thanks for the, er, enthusiastic first shift."

Meanwhile, the store itself was shut temporarily for a "deep clean".

The team continued: "The Pitlochry shop is now closed for a deep clean and will reopen later this week, squirrel free (we hope)."
