A spider laid eggs inside a cruise ship passenger's toe.
Colin Blake and his wife were spending the evening in the French city of Marseille on the holiday to mark their 35th wedding anniversary when his toe turned purple after swelling up.
He soon visited the ship's doctor who informed him that a Peruvian wolf spider - which are not poisonous - had bitten him and laid eggs inside his toe.
Blake, who lives in Northumberland, told BBC Radio Scotland: "My wife thought it may be because I had new sandals and they were rubbing on my big toe and that was causing it to be red."
The doctor cut his toe open and caused the arachnid's eggs to pour out.
However, when he visited a medic upon his return to the UK - they discovered that one of the eggs had hatched into a small spider that was trapped underneath his skin.
Blake said: "They believe the spider was making its way out - eating its way out of my toe."
