A pensioner who lived in China was complaining to doctors about discomfort in his ear when he was trying to sleep that sounded like ''something was beating a drum''.

He said: ''I felt discomfort in my ear while sleeping last night but I tried to ignore it.

''This morning the discomfort was still there. There were noises like something was beating a drum.''

A medic from Dalian Central Hospital in north eastern China performed an endoscopy on the patient and found there to be a horrifying bean-sized spider about two-inches deep that had spun webs around it to make itself at home.

The ear, nose and throat medic managed to flush out the spider by spraying his ear canal with water, confirming the gentleman suffered no injuries.

The specialist said he had seen numerous cases of flying insects such as ladybirds and most commonly cockroaches ending up in people's ears.
