A smart bra could detect breast cancer early

Researchers in Nigeria have developed a prototype of the garment, which they believe is capable of detecting cancer early.

The bra contains small ultrasound sensors that scan the breasts and can reveal the location of any tumours.

The experts hope that the device can improve breast cancer diagnosis in Sub-Saharan Africa, where women often have to undergo long journeys to access screening services.

Robotic engineer Kemisola Bolarinwa helped develop the smart bra following her mother's death from breast cancer in 2017 after the condition was diagnosed too late to save her.

She told SciDev.Net: "The smart bra must be worn on the breasts for a maximum of 30 minutes for the result to show.

"The result will show if the tumour is benign (harmless) or malignant (harmful).

"If they could detect early that they have cancer, then they will be safe, and many don't have to die."
