More than seven million people believe ghosts are helping them through life.
New research has found that almost half of Brits think that those who have passed away are capable of contacting the human race from the other side and two-thirds claim that they have been sent signals by someone beyond the grave.
The study, which was commissioned by Sky to mark the launch of the supernatural crime thriller 'The Rising' also revealed that 40 per cent of adults in the UK believe in the paranormal because of stories they have been told by others.
Actress Clara Rugaard, who stars as Neve Kelly in the show, said: "Playing a spirit gave me a new perspective on life and death.
"It's been really interesting to see how many people across the UK also believe in the afterlife."
