Boffin Adrian Egil is convinced that the key to mankind's survival can be found in the bacteria of excrement.

Egil is requesting frozen faeces from across the world that will allow him to create a vault of human microbiome. Stool samples from nations such as Ethiopia and Puerto Rico have been delivered to his lab at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

The scientist explained: "People are very aware of biodiversity, the reduction in plants and animals.

"If the elephant goes extinct in terms of your own health, you're not having a problem

"If your microbiome is disturbed in a certain way, then it can have tremendous consequences."

The 'microbiota vault' is a bank of frozen stool samples with a variety of bugs that can be re-cultured if they prove beneficial to the human body.
