Scientists are making "incredible progress" in their efforts to bring the dodo back from the dead.
DNA experts have sequenced the full genome of the extinct species for the first time and the US genetic engineering company Colossal Biosciences is working with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to find an appropriate habitat for the flightless birds.
Paleontologist Dr. Beth Shapiro said: "The dodo is a prime example of a species that became extinct because we - people - made it impossible for them to survive in their native habitat. I am thrilled to collaborate with Colossal and the people of Mauritius on the de-extinction and eventual rewilding of the dodo."
Colossal is also aiming to revive the woolly mammoth and Tasmanian tiger and co-founder Ben Lamm said: "Rewilding Mauritius with the dodo is a monumental step."
