The gadget alerts users to the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) - the gas that gives the breath a foul odour.

Users will be able to assess the levels of H2S on the breath that will be displayed on an accompanying smartphone app, the device will help people avoid any social embarrassment and could alert users to serious dental conditions.

The study has been conducted by experts at Samsung Electronics and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) who believe the findings will have significant health benefits.

They say in their paper: "Continuous monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in human breath for early-stage diagnosis of halitosis [bad breath] is of great significance for prevention of dental diseases.

"This study offers possibilities for direct, highly reliable and rapid detection of H2S in real human breath without the need of any collection or filtering equipment."
