Russia could cause a nuclear disaster

The latest bombardment from Moscow caused the disconnection of the Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant from the grid and a top diplomat from the European Union says that the incident "significantly" increases the threat of a nuclear accident.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said: "This is a serious breach to the nuclear safety, caused by Russia.

"Zaporizhzhia is the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe... and Russia is putting in danger the entirety of our joint European continent, Russia included."

Ukrainian officials have warned that fuel for the backup safety systems at the plant lasts for just 10 days before Europe would be facing the prospect of a nuclear catastrophe akin to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

State energy company Energoatom said: "The countdown has begun. If it is impossible to restore external power to the plant during this time, an accident with radiation consequences for the whole world may occur."

The chief of the UN's nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has appealed for a protection zone to be placed around the plant and is "astonished by the complacency" around the issue.

Rafael Grossi said: "This cannot go on. Each time we are rolling a dice.

"And if we allow this to continue time after time then one day our luck will run out."
