The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks - a watering hole in St Albans which claims to have been established in 793 AB - have closed its years after seeing over a millennium’s worth of drunks pass through its doors due to money woes increased by the COVID-19 pandemic despite trying “everything”.

Christo Tofalli, the manager said on Facebook: "Along with my team, I have tried everything to keep the pub going

He expressed being “heartbroken” about the pub’s closure, calling it “so much more than a business to me” and “honoured” to be a part of its long history.

Mitchells and Butlers, the parent company, have teased it could open it doors again.

They told CNN:"We are currently exploring all opportunities for the site's future and hope to reopen the pub under new management as soon as possible.”
