Professor Brian Cox does not believe that aliens exist.
The TV physicist claims that the existence of extraterrestrials is "unlikely" as there is little chance of sophisticated lifeforms evolving as humans have done.
He argues that "there's probably nothing else" and the human race is the only civilisation in this galaxy.
Cox told Noble Rot magazine: "You can confine the argument to the galaxy, to the Milky Way, because we're never going to contact anything outside that and nothing's ever contacting us from different galaxies."
The scientist also claims that his argument is also backed up with evidence from biologists.
He said: "The biologists I know think that it was such a freak occurrence that anything got multicellular. There's probably nothing else.
"I've got one friend who likes to say that all there will be out there is slime at best."
