Tennessee representative Tim Burchett has demanded that defence chiefs across the world should be doing more than simply recording sightings and fears that humans could lose control of the planet's airspace if the problem isn't tackled. He also accused the Pentagon of hiding information from Congress about the issue.

He said: "I don't trust the Department of Defence to get this right.

"Leadership there has always been part of a cover-up. It is clear from the public evidence that we don't have full control of our airspace.

"That's a security issue and it's also unacceptable."

Florida senator Marco Rubio is also said to be concerned that the US government is taking the issue too lightly.

An aide said: "Rubio is definitely frustrated. They are not moving fast enough, not doing enough, not sharing enough. It is not at the level it needs to be."
