The two Franklin Police Department officers were finishing up the previous job when they spotted the Australia native bird - which was named Pippa - darting across a street, and they set off trying to track it down with the help of an animal control officer and the FPD's Safety Division.

In a Facebook post, the police said: ''[The pursuers] were able to bring the emu home where it can no longer terrorise motorists of Lincoln Street.''

Thanking everyone who helped with the chase, they added: ''No job too small no bird too big!''
