A new study has found that the alcoholic beverage raises the danger of the disease - which was suffered by Henry VIII during Tudor times - by 60 per cent in men and 62 per cent in women.

The disease is a form of inflammatory arthritis that causes pain and swelling in the joints. It begins in the big toe and can spread to the rest of a person's feet and hands until it becomes disabling.

The experts at China's Soochow University said that beer and cider are the worst drinks for raising the risk of gout.

They wrote in their study, published in the journal Jama Network Open, said: "These findings suggest that specific alcohol beverages are associated with a similar risk of gout for men and women and that alcohol consumption should be minimised for gout prevention regardless of sex."
