A painting bought for less than $5 in Canada has gone up for auction after the artist was revealed to be David Bowie.
Auctioneer Cowley Abbott revealed that the painting had been purchased for $4.09 in Ontario and was discovered to have been painted by the 'Ashes to Ashes' singer in 1997.
The auction house explained that the artwork, titled 'D Head XLVI', is part of a series created by the late music icon during the 1990s.
Cowley Abbott spokeswoman Andrea McLoughlin explained: "The sitters ranged from band members, friends, and acquaintances and there were also some self-portraits.
"It has been suggested that, for some of these important paintings, Bowie drew inspiration from the Ziggy Stardust era. With long hair and a pronounced profile, this energetic and enigmatic portrait is truly a rare representation from a celebrated artist."
