University College London claim that a book - an edition of the Latin play ‘Querulous’ - was posted back to with after five decades with a anonymously authored note.

It read: “Dear Librarian, I fear this book is some 50 years overdue! Please don't just throw it out, now that I've taken the time and trouble to return it. It must be an 'antique' by now.”

The book - which is believed to have been checked out in 1974 - would have had late fees totalling $1,648.56, with a daily fine of 13 cents a day.

Suzanne Traue, a senior librarian at the university admitted that her “jaw may have literally dropped” to see the letter after returning to the office after being away due to COVID-19 for 18 months.

She said: "I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this book came with a note, but I think my jaw may literally have dropped when I read it.”
