Opposites really do attract when it comes to love.
New research has found that matching personality traits are not the key to finding a partner.
Experts at Michigan State University studied almost 1,300 couples and took a closer look at how five key personality traits - including emotional volatility and open-mindedness - affect levels of relationship satisfaction.
It is evident that many people are drawn to those with similar personalities but it is not considered to be a crucial factor for long-lasting love.
The study's lead authors Rebekka Weidmann and Mariah F. Purol said: "People may be likely to choose partners who are more similar to them, but our research shows that this similarity is not associated with higher life or relationship in established couples.
"Personality facet-level associations are under-researched and our findings revealed some unique insights into which facets are most strongly linked to satisfaction in a relationship and with life in general."
