Experts have revealed that bad dreams pose a significant health risk as the body is sent into a frenzy and releases chemicals that disrupt the normal rhythm of the heart - which can be fatal in rare cases.

Professor Tiina Paunio, a sleep expert at Helsinki University, said: "Generally, the health risks of nightmares are typically linked to the causative factors that underlie nightmares.

"In vulnerable individuals, for example, those with heart disease, nightmares can indirectly contribute to death.

"Nightmares usually occur under emotional stress - so acute life stress is one risk factor. Lifestyle, in particular alcohol use, is another well-known risk factor for nightmares."

Nightmares also have a damaging impact on sleep which increases the danger of heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.
