Videos shared online show Leonardo da Vinci's legendary artwork at the Louvre in Paris with cake smeared across the glass case protecting the painting.
Witnesses said that a man "dressed as an old lady" leapt from a wheelchair before attempting to smash the protective glass.
One observer claimed that the man proceeded to "smear cake on the glass and throw roses everywhere before being tackled by security".
Different footage shows the suspect telling bystanders in French: "Think of the planet... there are people who are destroying the planet, think about that... That's why I did it."
The man - wearing lipstick and a wig - was then escorted away by security. It is unclear what action he will face for his cake attack.
