Mike Pence thinks the United States will have "better choices" than Donald Trump in the future.
The former US vice president, who served under Trump from 2017 until 2021, believes that people in the nation want politicians with more "compassion" than the controversial former president - who is expected to launch another bid for the White House in 2024 on Tuesday (15.11.22).
Asked if his former boss should stand again, Pence told ABC News: "I think that's up to the American people. But I think we'll have better choices in the future.
"People in this country actually get along pretty well once you get out of politics. And I think they want to see their national leaders start to reflect the same, that same compassion and generosity of spirit. And I think, in the days ahead, I think there will be better choices."
Pence revealed that he and his family are giving "prayerful consideration" about a run for the presidency in 2024.
Quizzed on whether he could defeat Trump, the politician said: "Well, that would be for others to say, and it'd be for us to decide whether or not we'd want to test that."
Pence has distanced himself from Trump since the US Capitol riot last year and he suggested that the former President's conduct on January 6 was "reckless".
He recalled how he was left "angered" by Trump's tweet which claimed he lacked the courage to reject Joe Biden's election victory.
In his first interview since the shocking violence, Pence said: "I mean, the president's words were reckless. It was clear he decided to be part of the problem.
"The president's words that day at the rally (before the riot) endangered me and my family and everyone at the Capitol building."
