Men eat more meat than women in countries where gender equality is greater.
New research suggests that higher levels of gender equality in some parts of the world gives females the freedom to shun meat and allows men to purchase and eat it on a more regular basis.
The team concluded that gender equality gives both sexes a chance to form their own meat-eating habits as there is greater financial flexibility and less expectation to conform to gender norms.
Christopher Hopwood, the author of the study from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, said: "Our findings suggest that in contexts in which men and women are freer to exercise greater choice because of higher financial flexibility and weaker gender norms, differences between genders may be more likely to emerge."
