A Mediterranean diet can improve your mental health.
It has long been established that eating foods like fish, olive oil, whole grains, and tomatoes will do wonders for physical wellbeing and new research has discovered that it can ease a person's anxieties.
A study of more than 1,500 people looked into the traditional Western diet - which is made up of lots of processed foods - and found those who sustained themselves on Mediterranean dishes reported lower levels of mental distress.
Professor Lina Begdache, of Binghamton University in New York, said: "Stress is recognised to be a precursor to mental distress, and research, including our own, has demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet lowers mental distress.
"Thus, one element of the puzzle may be explained by the fact that the Mediterranean diet may be associated with a decrease in the negative components of perceived stress and an improvement in its positive attributes."
