Marmite has been banned by prison bosses after inmates were using it to make booze.
The yeast spread has been outlawed by staff at HMP Hindley, a category C jail in Wigan, after being used to make alcohol by some of the 600 prisoners.
A report from inspectors at the Independent Monitoring Board said: "Marmite was removed from the canteen sheet, to remove a source of yeast for hooch."
A prison employee, who has spent more than 15 years working in jails, claimed that some criminals would see the Marmite ban as "the final straw", although a Prison Service spokesman rejected concerns about the lack of spread.
They admitted that Marmite had recently been "unavailable" at the jail but added that it was now "back on the canteen list".
