A man got his foot stuck in a sinkhole after the heatwave caused the road to melt.
The 24-year-old from Newcastle was trapped from the thigh down for 20 minutes before getting freed by firefighters who resorted to using a hammer and chisel to dig him out.
A statement posted on the Fire and Rescue Service's Facebook page said: ''We were called today to a back lane in Heaton, where a 24-year-old man was on his way to buy himself breakfast stepped on some tarmac and lost his footing and went straight through the road.
''The tarmac had become so soft during the current heatwave we are having that it melted.''
