Footage has surfaced in recent weeks of gangsters giving out food parcels in areas such as Naples, Sicily and Palermo, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hit the country hard.

However, there are fears that the reliance on the mafia could lead to them taking control of people's lives once the crisis is over.

Nicola Gratteri, an antimafia investigator, told The Guardian newspaper: ''For over a month, shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs have been closed.

''Millions of people work in the grey economy, which means that they haven't received any income in more than a month and have no idea when they might return to work.

''If the state doesn't step in soon to help these families, the mafia will provide its services, imposing their control over people's lives.''
