Research from the National Taiwan University Hospital has revealed that a high percentage of over 65s were less likely to develop the incurable brain condition – which affects more than 944,000 people in Britain - if they get more sleep at the weekends.

Experts tracked the sleeping habits of 215 male and female volunteers for two years and found that those who got additional rest on weekend mornings were 74 per cent less likely to have deteriorating cognitive function – an early warning sign of the illness.

In a report of their findings, scientists said: "This is the first study to examine the effects of catch-up sleep on cognitive impairment in older adults.

"Results indicate weekend sleep is associated with a decreased risk of cognitive dysfunction."
