The US President has travelled to Ukraine for the first time since the war began on February 24 last year and claimed that Vladimir Putin's "war of conquest" is failing.

Biden wrote on Twitter: "When Putin launched his invasion nearly one year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He thought he could outlast us. But he was dead wrong."

Biden met President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv's Mariinsky Palace and confirmed that Washington would announce a $500 million military package for Ukraine - including ammunition for American Himars missiles.

Zelensky described the president's visit as "an extremely important sign of support for all Ukrainians".

Addressing his counterpart directly, Biden recalled how he would never forget the telephone conversation he had with Zelensky on the morning of the Russian invasion.

He said: "One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands.

"Russia's aim was to wipe Ukraine off the map. Putin's war of conquest is failing."

Biden insists that there is support for Ukraine across the political spectrum in the United States in the wake of Russian suggestions that western backing for the war-torn nation is declining.

He said: "I thought it was critical that there not be any doubt, none whatsoever, about US support for Ukraine in the war. The Ukrainian people have stepped up in a way that few people ever have in the past.

"For all the disagreement we have in our Congress on some issues, there is significant agreement on support for Ukraine.

"It's not just about freedom in Ukraine. It's about freedom of democracy at large."
