Iranian state television was briefly hacked live on air.
A newscast on Saturday (08.10.22) by the Islamic Republic of Iran News (IRINN) was interrupted by a group calling itself 'Edalate Ali' – which roughly translates to 'Ali's Justice'.
The broadcaster was airing a segment that showed the nation's leader Ayatollah Khamenei attending a meeting in the city of Bushehr when it was replaced by 15 seconds of footage, showing a mask against a black background and then an image of Khamenei engulfed with flames and a red-coloured target appearing on his head.
The footage featured photos of Mahsa Amini, Nika Shahkarami, Hadis Nafaji and Sarina Esmaeilzadeh – all of whom have died recently in Iran.
The captions in the footage read "join us and rise up" and "our youths' blooding is dripping off your paws" – in a reference to the Ayatollah.
A song with the lyrics 'Woman. Life. Freedom', a common chant from protesters – was playing in the background.
Protests against the regime erupted in Iran last month after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman who passed away in the custody of the nation's feared morality police.
Amini was detained for allegedly violating the country's stringent Islamic dress codes for women.
Following her death, thousands of women have taken to the streets across the nation and have resisted a government crackdown – with rights groups saying that almost 150 people have been killed and hundreds more arrested.
