Researchers at Beijing Normal University in China have warned that the human race could go extinct before communication is made with extraterrestrials as they calculated the chance of hearing from other planets.
The waiting time is twice as long as the 200,000 years since modern humans first evolved.
Research co-author Professor He Gao said: "We literally have to wait for the stars to align. At the very least, the aliens will have to be advanced enough to send a radio signal we can receive and understand.
"Our results may explain why we have not detected alien signals. Chances may improve as our ability to observe the cosmos improves."
The expert added: "Humans may not receive any signals before we go extinct."
