Humans could soon be having love affairs with computers.
Researchers suggest that the tech is advancing at such a rapid pace that people will be having romances with AI in the future.
Boffins at Cambridge University believes that apps such as Replika, which uses AI to create companions, will become increasingly sophisticated and more popular for humans desperate to find love.
Dr. Henry Shevlin, of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the university, said: "Currently, these are niche apps, but it's incredibly likely over the next two or three years, that this stuff moves into the mainstream, at the level of friendship and of romance."
The expert suggested that computers could also help those who are contemplating playing away.
He said: "Imagine a sexually-frustrated partner in a marriage, who might be tempted to cheat. If they could have a harmless erotic role play with a bot - could that be a less harmful option?"
