Hot showers could be deadly.
High water temperatures place extra strain on the heart and are particularly risky for those who have pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
The study from bathroom retailer Plumbworld said: "It causes blood vessels to dilate, requiring the heart to pump harder, leading to increased cardiovascular stress."
Piping-hot showers also put skin and hair at risk of damage as it strips both of their natural oils.
The research said: "Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can worsen after hot showers."
Furthermore, a hot shower before going to bed also makes it harder to fall asleep.
The experts note: "Although a hot shower can initially feel relaxing, the resultant increase in body temperature can interfere with the body's natural cooling process, necessary for sleep."
Eleanor Potter of Plumbworld said: "Moderation and awareness are key. Opting for shorter, lukewarm showers can help minimise risks."
