A giant floating restaurant in Hong Kong has capsized.
The Jumbo Floating Restaurant was one of the planet's most iconic eateries as it was a giant ship converted into a restaurant and British monarch Queen Elizabeth once dined there.
The restaurant was forced to close in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was towed away last week before sinking in the South China Sea.
Owners Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises said in a statement: "Jumbo Floating Restaurant departed Hong Kong last Tuesday (14.06.22) and until Saturday (18.06.22) afternoon, when passing Xisha Island in the South China Sea, the vessel encountered adverse conditions which water soon entered before it began to tip.
"Despite the efforts of the towing company responsible for the trip to rescue the vessel, unfortunately it capsized on Sunday (19.06.22)."
The statement continued: "The water depth at the scene is over 1,000 metres, making it extremely difficult to carry out salvage works.
"(We are) very saddened by this accident."
