Hillary Clinton has likened Donald Trump's supporters to "cult members".
The politician, who lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election, called for a "formal deprogramming" of the "MAGA extremists" who ardently back the controversial Republican frontrunner.
Clinton told CNN: "Sadly, so many of those extremists, those MAGA (Make America Great Again) extremists, take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure.
"He's only it for himself. He's now defending himself in civil actions and criminal actions. And when do they break with him? You know, because at some point, you know, maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members."
Clinton's remarks were met with anger in some quarters and have been compared to her 2016 "basket of deplorables" description of Trump's supporters.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, one of Trump's rivals for the Republican nomination in the 2024 election, joined the condemnation of the ex-First Lady's comments.
He said of the former president's followers: "These are patriotic Americans. They want to see the country do well.
"Some people would be with Trump no matter what, but I think the bulk of the people... appreciate what he did, but they also understand that he has got limitations in terms of his electability."
