Grieving people could be reunited with their loved ones in hologram form.
Tech companies claim that AI (artificial intelligence) can help surviving relatives cope with loss - but it has prompted fears that some mourners may never come to terms with grief.
AI is able to learn from videos, photos and social media posts to recreate a version of a dead loved one, ranging from simple chatbots to sophisticated avatars.
However, psychologist Mary Frances O'Connor fears that the holograms could only serve to prolong the misery of losing someone close.
She told the New Scientist: "It's one thing to have a photograph and to clearly understand that was the past.
"It's another thing to have a hologram or a chatbot that appears to be interacting with you in the present moment."
