Germany is planning to legalise cannabis for recreational purposes.
Possession of up to 30 grams of the drug will be legal for adults in the country from 2024 under the new plans from the coalition government.
The plan is yet to be approved in parliament and still has to get the green light from the European Commission but health minister Karl Lauterbach said that decriminalising dope would be better for the health of young people.
The minister told reporters: "If this law comes to pass, it would be the most liberal project to legalise cannabis in Europe, but also the most regulated market.
"It could be a model for Europe."
In the EU, only Malta has legalised recreational cannabis while several countries have legalised limited use of the drug for medicinal purposes.
Canada and Uruguay have also legalised recreational cannabis.
