A Florida researcher has broken the record for time spent living underwater.
Dr. Joseph Dituri has spent more than 74 days at the bottom of a 30-foot-deep lagoon in Key Largo without depressurisation.
The previous record for the most days spent living underwater was 73 days, set by two professors in the same location in 2014.
Researchers are studying Dr. Dituri - who is nicknamed Dr. Deep Sea - to analyse his health and the psychological impact of being confined for so long.
Dr. Dituri began his journey on 1 March but his time underwater has not stopped him from teaching classes to students at the University of South Florida.
He said: "The curiosity for discovery has led me here.
"My goal from day one has been to inspire generations to come, interview scientists who study life undersea and learn how the human body functions in extreme environments."
Dr. Dituri has no plans to stop and has vowed to stay in the lagoon for at least 100 days.
