Clarence Medeiros says his latest weighs in at a whopping 50 pounds after growing the vegetable - known locally as kalo - for as many years.

He told KHNL-TV: "I thought it was going to be a little over 25 pounds. I was going low.”

His wife Nellie echoed the sentiment, saying: "When it got put onto the scale and we saw it, and it said 50, we were like eyes wide open. It can't be that heavy!"

As a part of evidence in their bid for the Guinness World Record, Holokai Brown, a representative from the Hawaii Ulu Cooperative oversaw the weighing.

Holokai said: "I've seen a lot of taro over the years, but nothing anywhere close to that large. So it was pretty amazing.”
