The Godsons fear losing their property in Hertfordshire after neighbours claimed that their eight parrots have annoyed them with their squawking.

Pete Godson and his wife Andrea have spent £1,000 on a jungle room for the birds - named Jasper, Ede, Freddie, Pablo, Little Roy, Willow, Barney and Elvis - but their squawks of "hello" and "shut that "door" have left the neighbours unimpressed, although Pete has launched an impassioned defence of the creatures.

He told The Sun newspaper: "I can hardly order the parrots to keep quiet.

"Barney has picked up some choice phrases, such as 'Shut the f*** up' and 'What a w*****', but none of that happens outside.

"These birds are like children to us, they are part of the family. I would do everything in my power to keep them.

"The local kids and everyone loves them. They sit on their shoulders and let everyone tickle and stroke them."
