The Pacific pocket mouse named Pat – after 'Star Trek' legend Sir Patrick Stewart – has been awarded the Guinness World Record for the longest-living mouse in human care at the age of nine years and 209 days old.

Pat was born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on 14 July 2013 as part of a conservation and reintroduction programme.

The rodent was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records in a special ceremony held last week.

Debra Shier, associate director of Recovery Ecology at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said: "This recognition is so special for our team, and is significant for the species.

"It's indicative of the dedication and incredible care we as an organisation provide for each species, from the largest to the very smallest."

According to the Alliance, only three small populations of Pacific pocket mice remain.
