Elon Musk sent Twitter into a frenzy by announcing plans to buy Manchester United - before he confirmed it was all a joke.
The Tesla boss - who is the world's richest man - claimed he was set to buy the English soccer team in a tweet that he posted on Tuesday (16.08.22).
In a series of tweets, Musk wrote on the micro-blogging platform: "To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!
"Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome (sic)"
The tweet - which already has more than 650,000 likes - prompted a wave of speculation and interest from fans of the team. However, a few hours later, Musk insisted he was just joking.
He said: "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams."
