The world has no plan in place if aliens make contact.
Space expert Professor Fred Watson explained that scientists have a checklist to determine if aliens who do try and contact Earth are genuine or not.
But if scientists were able to establish that the extraterrestrials are real there is no known policy in existence for who on the planet would actually greet them.
Watson said: "There isn't anything in place.
"There's a well-established chain of boxes that need to be ticked and it would go through a lot of analysis to ensure that what you're talking about is a real phenomenon.
"However, once scientists identified what had happened, it'd then be up to the political leaders of the world to decide what to do about it."
A plan may need to be put in place in the future, with China claiming that its telescope may have picked up signals from aliens.
