Donald Trump has bizarrely claimed that wind turbines are causing whales to die.
The former US president used a rally in South Carolina on Monday (25.09.23) to make the baseless suggestions that "windmills" are driving the animals "crazy" and are causing environmental harm.
Trump said: "There has only been, listen to this, one such whale killed off the coast of South Carolina in the last 50 years.
"But on the other hand, their windmills are causing whales to die in numbers never seen before. Nobody does anything about that. They're washing up onshore.
"You wouldn't see it once a year. Now they're coming up on a weekly basis. The windmills are driving them crazy. They're driving the whales, I think, a little batty."
The Republican presidential nomination frontrunner has form for making false claims about renewable energy as he previously declared that the noise from wind turbines can cause cancer and that the structures "kill all the birds".
Experts say there is no proven link to ill health from wind turbines and there is scant evidence to validate Trump's whale theory.
Andrew Read, a whale researcher and commissioner of the Marine Mammal Commission, said of Trump: "He displays an astonishing lack of knowledge of whales and whale standings.
"There is no scientific evidence whatsoever that wind turbines, or surveying for wind turbines, is causing any whale deaths at all."
