Dogs have five personality types.
A team of experts at the University of East London used an algorithm to go through 70,000 behavioural records of canines and established that the animals can be classified into five groups - just like humans.
Pooches can be categorised as excitable/hyper-attached, anxious/fearful, aloof/predatory, reactive/assertive or calm/agreeable while humans can placed into the "big five" personality types - extroversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism.
Researchers think that the findings can help pair dogs with their ideal owners as, for example, excitable canines need a master who can cope with their energy.
It could also assist in selecting or training mutts for specific roles where behaviour is important, such as in the emergency services.
Expert Dr. Mohammad Amirhosseini said: "This innovative AI-based methodology holds promise for revolutionising the selection and training of dogs for specific roles, both working and non-working."
