Rogue dog breeders have been creating Frankenstein puppies in amateur labs worth £40,000.
An investigation has found that unregulated fertility clinics have been concocting new breeds of dogs like hairless French bulldogs, which could suffer poor health and shorter life spans.
Traders have been capitalising on the reluctance of vets that are willing to work in fertility clinics, as over 60 clinics have been found on social media across the UK. Many of these advertise illegal services like artificial insemination for breeds that struggle to reproduce, which is detrimental to the dogs health.
Leading TV vet Dr Pete Wedderburn told Edinburgh live: “The rise of these unregulated clinics is a scandal. A licensed vet would never get involved in breeding dogs that will suffer in their lives.
"That has led to a vacuum where these unregulated clinics have sprung up.”
A wildlife crime source added: “These clinics are appearing in every town and city. They are out to make a fast buck.
“They have no qualifications and no cares about the wellbeing of the strange dogs they are creating.”
The charity NatureWatch, said: “These laboratories are ¬creating Frankenstein ¬puppies that are destined to suffer for their looks.”
