The number of deadly shark attacks doubled worldwide in 2023.
Researchers at the University of Florida found that deaths due to the ocean predators rose to 10 last year - up five from 2022.
The United States had the most unprovoked attacks with 36, but only two were fatal.
Experts say that the "unnerving" rise in deaths can be explained by more people being in the ocean each year and a stronger emphasis on reporting fatal attacks.
The team also found that a majority of swimmers were killed by great whites, tiger and bull sharks in 2023.
Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Museum of Natural History's shark research programme, said: "This is within the range of the normal number of bites, though the fatalities are a bit unnerving this year."
