Snacking on crisps and biscuits increases the risk of both stroke and dementia.
A study conducted by experts from Massachusetts General Hospital discovered that people who eat more processed foods were at an increased risk of serious health problems once they reached middle and old age.
The unhealthy eaters were nine per cent more likely to have a stroke and 16 per cent more likely to be afflicted by cognitive impairment - brain decline that can result in dementia.
The findings add to established evidence that sugary snacks are connected to worse health and issues including type 2 diabetes and cancer.
Dr W. Taylor Kimberly, the lead author of the study, said: "A healthy diet is important in maintaining brain health among older adults.
"We found that increased consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with a higher risk of both stroke and cognitive impairment."
