Farmers will be forced to give the animals cattle feeds containing "methane suppressants" in a bid to stop the cows from releasing their toxic digestive gas.

The measure has been adopted in documents setting out how the UK will be able to reach its goal of adding no greenhouse gases to the atmosphere by 2050.

Cows and other farm animals produced around 14 per cent of global carbon emissions from human activity but, contrary to popular belief, the gas comes from burping rather than passing wind.

Tom Bradshaw, deputy president of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), is optimistic about the plans.

He said: "The evidence suggests these products could be useful.

"I don't think we know enough yet about the impact they will have on the efficiency of the diet... but it's something that we have to investigate to try and reduce methane emissions."
