People are being urged to look out for brown, walnut-sized lumps, as they may be a sac of praying mantis eggs.

They are found at the end of branches and are primed to hatch in the warmth of a living room, and Molly Kreuze, from Virginia, was stunned to find the bugs into her home.

Thankfully she was able to remove them, and said: ''In my Googling, I discovered that people really like praying mantises. They are useful, they eat other bugs. People use them for organic gardening.''

Daniel Reed also urged people to cut the branches that have the lumps and his warning has been widely shared on social media.

He wrote on Facebook: ''If you happen to see a walnut-sized/shaped egg mass, on your Christmas tree, don't fret, clip the branch and put it in your garden.''

Research has also revealed that legions of lice, mites, moths and spiders can be lurking in Christmas trees too.
