According to Tupelo Parks & Recreation Director, Alex Farned,1,700 catfish were delivered to the Mississippi lake on Wednesday, but were packed too tightly together and contracted a bacterial infection.

The animals began floating to the surface of Veterans Park and city workers have removed more than 1,000 dead fish and buried them.

Alex told The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal: ''Sometimes the lowest bid is not the best bid.

''They ended up giving us sick fish. I don't know how far they rode to get here, but they were oxygen deprived. They were so packed in there they were scarring each other.

''It's been an ordeal. It really stinks.''
